Location- Starting Small and Focusing
I want to take this second post and let you know about my location. Oddly to me, and maybe I'm just weird and ignorant, the first question many people ask me about Jinji Cycles is, "Do you have a location?" Well, yes, I do, but not probably in the way most think. I have chosen, for several reasons which I will outline over several posts, to operate Jinji Cycles from a shop located at my home. RED FLAG! RED FLAG! Guy operating from home! That's sometimes the reaction, right? I understand that perception but rest assured that my decision to operate from home is a highly calculated decision on my part. "Is this guy just like every other Craigslist poster, 'Experienced bike mechanic looking to just make some extra cash, way lower than shops who charge you for work you don't even need'." The answer is a resounding, "NO!" I have resisted the easy temptation to run the craigslist ad because I want my customers to be people who want to come to me because Jinji Cycles is the best place to get their bike serviced, not because I'm the cheapest tune available. No double meaning intended there. Jinji Cycles is, and will continue to be, appointment and client based. And this is the first reason I have chosen to operate as I do. This means I do not serve walk-in customers. Rude, right? No, focused I would say. By not jumping directly into a high visibility retail front I believe I am able to more closely concentrate on the customers that come to me. By taking each customer in turn and working one bike at a time Jinji Cycles will be able to provide a level of dedicated customer service that surpasses the traditional bike shop. I believe right now that a traditional commercial location would simply be a distraction from the sort of clear focus and client committment I am striving for at Jinji Cycles. We're starting small here. I want to start small. Sure, I could have gotten a fat business loan and built out some location and said, "Here I am, come!" You see, I don't want to build Jinji Cycles off of its location; I want to build it off of the best, most accounted bicycle maintenance and repair possible. I know this will take time, but I believe that, in the end, it will produce a more stable business foundation and a reputation that can't be bought with loan.
